Responsibility

Resort Initiatives

Moon Palace’s commitment to preserving the Riviera Cancún region is truly inspiring. Every single piece of trash or waste that’s discarded on-site gets sorted and diverted from landfill. 90% of the resort’s energy is produced by a third party which uses carbon credits to support clean energy. Additionally, all rooms in Sunrise, Nizuc, The Golf Course and The Grand are equipped with sensors which optimize energy saving. These sensors automatically deactivate AC when balcony doors open & switch off lights when there is no movement detected for long periods of time. Water-saving technology has been installed across the property to efficiently control the amount of water used in toilets, showers, and wash basins, reducing waste significantly. Solar panels have also been installed on a number of Moon Palace buildings to supply these areas with energy-efficient lighting. Furthermore, complimentary bike rentals are offered throughout the property which provide guests with a carbon-free transportation option during their stay.

Each month more than 150 tons of organic waste is composted at the resort and used in food production for Moon Palace kitchens, gardening activities, golf course maintenance and ornamental plant development. 12 different species of microgreens are hand-grown on-site, including mustard, Swiss chard, honeydew melon, and more. In a matter of days, they are cut by hand, transferred to containers and taken directly to Palace Resorts kitchens, ready for world-class chefs to create gourmet masterpieces. In 2020, almost 700 lbs of microgreens were delivered for use in Palace Resorts’ kitchens. Nearly 3,000 litres of biodiesel fuel is also produced at the Moon Palace on a monthly basis using burned oil from its kitchens. This fuel helps power various maintenance vehicles throughout the property. Last year, 18,626 liters of biofuel was produced at Moon Palace, enabling the resort to reduce greenhouse emissions by 87%.

Moon Palace is currently preserving 325 acres of protected lands. This mangrove area plays a key role in carbon sequestration and functions as a habitat for species that are categorized as being “at-risk” by the Mexican government. The resort has also protected 9.3 km of beach in Quintana Roo and Benito Juárez for sea turtle conservation. To date, over 2 million turtle hatchlings have been released into the wild, the most abundant being the white turtle (Chelonia mydas).

Venue Initiatives

In addition to several large-scale prevention strategies, we’ve launched a number of exciting greening initiatives within our new venue area, including a single-use plastic ban. Compostable plates, cups, cutlery and napkins will be utilized for food & beverages in addition to trash in the venue getting sorted post-event and diverted from landfill! Multiple Water Refill stations will also be available inside the venue in an effort to eliminate the need for plastic water bottles.

Additional Greening Efforts

  • Optional Environmental Impact Fun Donation included during purchase process
  • Eco-conscious merchandise gifts and items
  • Reduction of meat-based menu items in the concert area
  • Plastic-free art installations inside the venue
  • Ecologically sourced signage
